Episode 148: Sophie Ellis-Bextor on pop music and premature babies
How did Sophie Ellis-Bextor offend an arena full of Take That fans? What's the worst lyric she's ever written? And why is she the Craig David of pregnancy? Answering all these questions is ACTUAL SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR!
We are also joined by her brand new baby, the lovely Micky! She tells us what it's like to be mum to five sons, while still managing to record a new album with a full orchestra.
It all gets momentarily serious as Sophie and Ellie share their experiences of having premature babies. We talk about Borne, a medical research charity working to identify the causes of premature birth and improve outcomes.
Every year 15 million babies are born preterm around the world, and over 1 million die due to complications from being born to soon. In the UK, 60,000 families are affected every year - that's 8 per cent of births. And like Sophie and Ellie, 85 per cent of women who go into early labour had no idea they were at risk. Borne is trialling the first new treatment for the prevention of preterm labour in over 50 years, and you can find out more about their work at borne.org.uk or follow them @BorneCharity.
Of course, things then return to normal as we chat about Sophie's new record, George Michael, and weeing in swimming pools.
Sophie Ellis-Bextor's brilliant new album, The Song Diaries, is out now. For tour dates go to sophieellisbextor.net, or follow her @sophieellisbextor.
